From Brazil to the Sky: Unpacking My Engineering Passion and Science Curiosity

Updated: Jan 26

As the semester came to an end, I boarded a flight back to my home in Brazil. Returning home always gives me space to think and dream more freely. Somewhere above the clouds, with my notebook open on the small airplane table, ideas began to flow. It felt cinematic in the best way. That quiet moment reminded me why I fell in love with engineering and science in the first place. Curiosity, purpose, and the desire to grow not only as an engineer, but as a human, are what drive me. Science challenges me to improve myself and to use what I learn to help others, and that is what continues to excite me every day.

During the global pandemic, I moved from Brazil to the United States, stepping into a time filled with uncertainty and change. In the midst of that transition, I lost my uncle after his eight year battle with cancer. His strength and perseverance left a permanent mark on my life. A few months later, on September 16, 2021, I witnessed something that reshaped the way I viewed science and humanity. SpaceX launched a mission that carried Hayley Arceneaux, a bone cancer survivor, into space. Watching her journey felt deeply personal. It was more than a spaceflight. It was proof of resilience, courage, and what is possible when science meets human determination. Experiencing personal loss while witnessing such a powerful triumph highlighted the extraordinary strength of the human spirit.

Throughout the history of space exploration, one principle has remained constant: only individuals in optimal health are sent beyond Earth. This reality has always stayed with me, especially when I think about people like my uncle and Hayley. It reinforces the idea that science is not just about discovery, but about hope. It shows that overcoming illness is not a distant dream, but a future that science actively works toward. No one facing these challenges is alone, and progress is always within reach.

This is why engineering means so much to me. It is not simply a career path, but a way to create meaningful change. Engineering is about pushing boundaries, questioning what already exists, and striving to build something better. It is a continuous journey of growth, impact, and responsibility. Through engineering, I have found a purpose rooted in innovation, resilience, and the belief that science has the power to improve lives, including our own.

Today, I feel a deep sense of pride reflecting on my role as Mechanical Lead within the Michigan Aeronautical Science Association (MASA). MASA is more than a student organization. It is a collaborative community built on sharing knowledge, mentoring others, and creating opportunities for anyone curious about aerospace and engineering. The culture encourages learning openly and growing together, which is what makes it so impactful.

Being surrounded by driven and talented engineers constantly pushes me to grow. The hands on experience I gain through MASA directly strengthens my academic work, allowing me to connect theory from the classroom to real world engineering challenges. Leading within this environment has been incredibly fulfilling because it aligns perfectly with my passion for engineering and building systems that matter.

Every hour invested in MASA feels purposeful. It represents progress toward the future I am working to build, one where I can contribute meaningfully, lead with intention, and help shape the world through engineering. As we step into a new year, I encourage everyone to move forward with clarity, ambition, and confidence. Think big, stay focused, and let your goals speak loudly.

Happy New Year!

Bruna :)
